PHOTOVOLTAIC SELF-CONSUMPTION, THE INDUSTRIAL OPPORTUNITY

July 27, 2020

Last March our CEO Pablo Cuesta had the opportunity to write an article for PV Magazine. In it, he explains and reflects on the changes in electricity generation and consumption based on photovoltaic energy and on Spanish Royal Decree 15/2018.

INDUSTRIAL SELF-CONSUMPTION

Royal Decree 15/2018 removes several legal obstacles that have hitherto made it difficult to establish self-consumption in Spain and opens a door to the photovoltaic sector, since as mentioned in title VI “The commitment to an energy transition is essential and urgent.”

This energy transition process may generate certain doubts in its implementation, but it must be analyzed from a triple perspective of opportunity in the industrial sector.

On the one hand, “the development of competitive, innovative and technologically viable solutions by the component manufacturing industry, engineering and installation companies. The impact of R&D and subsequent market support will lead to the consolidation of an ecosystem of projects and financing”, says Pablo Cuesta.

In this sense, the ambitious goals of adding more renewables in the Energy Mix (European Renewable Energy Directive and Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan) and the progressive electrification of transport will be two of the key factors.

On the other hand, “the construction of mini-generation power plants on the roofs of industrial buildings will allow them to be supplied with electricity at very competitive prices, with reasonable amortization terms that will entail reducing spending, replacing it with an investment and ownership of an electricity generation asset”, explains our CEO, Pablo Cuesta.

Finally, “the social impact through the improvement of the trade balance through the reduction of fuel imports (and with the increase in the export of technology and solutions made in Spain), the reduction of pollution and the reduction of the climate change damages”, says Pablo Cuesta.

These three points would summarize the current industrial opportunity of photovoltaic solar energy that, with the mechanisms and opportunities existing in the market, allows us to reduce the electricity bill of our companies and families, without the need of subsidies.
